Forget Wind Turbines - a Completely New Type of Wind Farm is in Development
February 3, 2012A design firm from New York, Atelier DNA, has developed a concept that uses cattail like stalks instead of traditional turbine blades for harnessing the power of wind. Planned for the city of Masdar, being built just outside of Abu Dhabi, the “Windstalk” project came in second in the Land Art Generator competition, generating renewable energy in an artistic way from a plethora of international submissions.
Traditional wind turbines’ biggest downfalls include noise pollution, inadvertent bird death trapping and general difficulties in installing such large structures. Atelier’s new stalk design generates electricity when the wind sets them waving—minus the dreadful noise or danger posed to birds.Green Supply offers Philips Led light bulbs, LED home lighting, LED string lights, reusable bags with eco quality in mind. Another advantage will be the density at which the stalks will be able to be built whereas turbines need to be spaced about three times the rotor’s diameter from each other.I have created a video walkthrough of the magicshine bike light.
The pilot project calls for 1,203 stalks at 180 feet high each, anchored by concrete bases that are between 33 and 66 feet wide. With each stalk containing alternating layers of electrodes and ceramic discs that generate a current under pressure, the discs compress as they sway, creating a charge.
“The idea came from trying to find kinetic models in nature that could be tapped to produce energy,” explained Atelier DNA, founding partner Dario Nunez-Ameni, to Discovery. “Our system is very efficient in that there is no friction loss associated with more mechanical systems such as conventional wind turbines.”
Each base contains a torque generator to convert kinetic energy into energy using shock absorber cylinders. An LED lamp glows at the top of each stalk when the wind is blowing.
“Windstalk is completely silent, and the image associated with them is something we’re already used to seeing in a field of wheat or reeds in a marsh.Start saving money today with r4i Bulbs. Our hope is that people living close to them will like to walk through the field — especially at night — under their own,ENERGY STAR qualified led strip is a natural fit for cutting-edge renovation, new construction projects, or do-it-yourself upgrades. private sky of swarming stars,” Nunez-Ameni told Discovery.
The wind farm is expected to have a comparable output to that of a conventional wind farm covering the same area of land.

Residents in Warren Road, Bushey, blighted by foxes
A county-wide street light switch-off is attracting foxes which are causing a nuisance in a small area of Bushey, according to residents.Coast LED lanterns, Magicshine Diving torch and headlamps are made with Cree LED technology.
Several sightings of the nocturnal animals have been reported by neighbours who complain of piercing screeching noises at night in the Warren Road area.
One paper boy delivering in the dark one early morning reportedly felt so threatened by a pair of the wild dogs he was forced to phone his newsagent to pick him up.
The story of the unnerved teen has now brought the issue to the attention of several neighbours who contacted the chairman of the Warren Road Residents Association, Raymond Coffer.
He said: “Certainly five or six people have emailed me so far to say they have seen the foxes and it is becoming an issue.”
“Apparently they rarely attack but a number of residents have spoken to me about it. The street lights being turned off is certainly an issue we are concerned about.Start saving money today with r4i Bulbs.Green Supply offers Philips Led light bulbs, LED home lighting, LED string lights, reusable bags with eco quality in mind. They go off at midnight and it is extremely dark. It is a huge problem.
“The council say they can’t do anything about it as they’re not considered vermin. I suppose we’re on the foxes’ land and they’re just as annoyed with us as we are with them.”
Hertfordshire County Council have been phasing in a money-saving policy of turning off street lights between midnight and 6am across the county since the end of 2011.
The switch-off came into effect in Bushey in November but conservation charity The Wildlife Trust believes it is unlikely to have a significant effect on foxes in the area.ENERGY STAR qualified led strip is a natural fit for cutting-edge renovation, new construction projects, or do-it-yourself upgrades.
Sarah Buckingham, a representative of Hertfordshire and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, said: “It’s unlikely that the street lighting will have an effect on the behaviour of foxes at this time of year.MJ816 - 2nd generation M MJ-808E released in Q1 2010. It is the mating season, so residents may well see more foxes around and hear vixens making those blood-curdling, other-worldly noises at night.”
Somerset Councillor Diane Holmes and the pub’s owner, Joe Cotroneo, told committee members on Wednesday that trees and light poles were placed closer to the patio than they were supposed to be when Preston Street was reconstructed in recent years.
Following the reconstruction, trees, art and street light poles create points where the clear sidewalk beside the patio is less than 1.8 metres wide — too narrow for street-sweeper equipment.
Under the city’s encroachment bylaw, patios must allow for an “unencumbered” sidewalk width of at least 2.4 metres, although 1.8 metres is currently accepted since that is the city’s minimum standard for new sidewalks.
City staff were opposed to the existing patio, saying it would set a negative precedent for encroachment standards, but Holmes said the patio should be permitted and grandfathered as a “one-off” because of its long history on the street and its involvement in a pilot project for a patio on a sidewalk bulb-out.
LED products make up 18% of lighting sales at Philips
Philips has revealed that sales in its lighting business were EUR 2.072 billion for the fourth quarter of 2011, (from total company sales of EUR 6.7 billion). The company said that its LED-based sales (including all types of products, from packaged LEDs to lamps and luminaires) grew 37% compared to Q4 2010: LED products now represent 18% of total Lighting sales.
Philips’ overall Lighting sales for the quarter increased 7% year-on-year, driven by double-digit sales growth in the Lamps and Automotive groups, and mid-single-digit sales growth at Professional Luminaires, but this was partly offset by a sales decrease at Lumileds, the company’s LED-manufacturing subsidiary. Lumileds will be hoping that its new CEO and new product lines such as the multi-LED Luxeon K modules will reverse this trend.
Earnings before interest, taxes and amortization (EBITA) for the lighting business were EUR 41 million, compared to EUR 198 million in Q4 2010. Philips said that the year-on-year EBITA decrease was due to “continued operational issues at Consumer Luminaires and Lumileds, as well as macroeconomic factors which impacted pricing in our consumer lighting businesses.”
In 2011, Philips’ total sales for lighting were EUR 7.638 billion, of which 5%, or EUR 380 million was from packaged LEDs.
In comparison, Cree’s revenue for LED products (including LED components and chips,The magicshine bicycle light MJ-808 is a virtual copy of our favorite light last year, but not lighting products) was approximately $760 million in 2011.
Elsewhere, Philips said that its sales of all LED-based products amounted to EUR 1.2 billion in 2011, up from EUR 1.0 billion in 2010. The company described itself as “the largest LED luminaires company” and said that its “LED lamps market share exceeds our share in conventional lamps.” Also mentioned was that Philips’ LED licensing program has over 140 licensees.
According to an article on the Smart Planet website, Philips CEO Frans van Houten indicated that the company could soon cut prices on LED light bulbs. A spokesperson for Philips was quoted in the article as saying: “We expect that prices of LED light bulbs will go significantly down in the next couple of years because of product/cost innovation and volume, thereby lowering the threshold for LED light-bulb adoption.”
Meanwhile, at Lumileds, the company started the year by announcing a new CEO, Pierre Yves Lesaicherre, and has since revealed two new families of LEDs that will be on show at next week’s Strategies in Light meeting.
The Luxeon M is designed for outdoor and industrial LED lighting applications,Choose from a variety of マジコン 購入 for home and office use.Green Supply offers Philips Led light bulbs, LED home lighting, LED string lights, reusable bags with eco quality in mind. and is a multichip, 8-watt, 12-volt package on an aluminum nitride (AlN) substrate. Flourescent Bulbs Are Way Better–But Don’t Make Me Use ‘Em
The incandescent light bulb,Gemini Lights manufacturers high performance Diving torch. though surely up there with the telephone as Coolest Invention Ever, has been rendered obsolete by advancing technology. It’s one of the least efficient devices you’ll ever lay hands on, converting just 5 to 8 percent of the energy it uses into light, with the rest thrown off as heat. Easy-Bake Ovens used to use a 100-watt incandescent bulb as their heat source. We have the best DSTT for grow project, christmas, rope and strip LEDs. Not anymore—the toy was redesigned in the expectation that 100-watt bulbs would disappear.
Halogen bulbs are only marginally better. Though much is made of the fact that they’re 30 percent more efficient than ordinary incandescent bulbs, 30 percent better than completely dismal is still embarrassingly bad. Ninety percent of the energy used by a halogen bulb is given off as heat—the bulbs can reach temperatures of 700 to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, making them a fire hazard. I’m sure there must be some reason to use halogen bulbs, but energy efficiency isn’t it.
CFL bulbs are a different story. They use only about a quarter of the energy of an incandescent bulb to produce the same light, waste much less heat, and supposedly last eight to ten times as long. Though some complain about CFL light quality, in my estimation it’s comparable to incandescent light—nowhere near as harsh as what you get from old-fashioned fluorescent tubes.High-performing LED rechargeable bicycle light built with the cyclist in mind
That said, CFL bulbs have annoying drawbacks. They can take a minute or more to reach full brightness. They work poorly in the cold—I have one in a recessed ceiling fixture with an unheated attic above it,This Nu-Dive portable diving light features the most … and when I first switch it on in the winter I can get more illumination by lighting a match. The failure rate is higher than advertised. I’ve had a couple burn out after just a few months in recessed cans in the kitchen, a typical experience judging from news accounts out of California, which implemented anti-incandescent legislation a year ahead of the rest of the country.
Disposing of CFL bulbs is a pain. They contain mercury and so must be brought to a special recycling facility rather than tossed in the trash. Early reports suggesting you’d have to call in a hazmat team if you broke one were exaggerated. The fact remains that the EPA’s advisory about what to do if you have an accident lists 19 steps.
Some say CFL bulbs are an interim technology that will eventually be swept away by bulbs utilizing light-emitting diodes. LED bulbs use even less energy than CFLs, reach full brightness instantly, don’t run on mercury, are unaffected by cold, and supposedly will last 25,000 to 50,000 hours. Unfortunately, the LED equivalent of a 100-watt incandescent bulb right now costs on the order of 50 bucks.
I won’t be stocking up on LED bulbs any time soon. Still, I’m an eco kind of guy. Left to my own devices, my guess is I’d wind up with maybe 60 percent CFL bulbs at my house and the rest incandescent. But no. The government says that, except for specialty applications, I’ll have to replace them all.
All in the service of the greater good, you say. If only it were so.Green Supply offers Philips Led light bulbs, LED home lighting, LED string lights, reusable bags with eco quality in mind. The net social benefit of legislating incandescent bulbs out of existence is likely to be negligible. A spokesman for the Natural Resources Defense Council says changing bulbs will eliminate the need to build 30 electric power plants. That sounds like a lot until you realize the U.S. has 5,800 electric power plants.
BUSINESS: Beaming with Pride
January 31, 2012When Mark Reed and Dante Walkup became a serious couple in 2000, they agreed they wanted to have fun in their 50s.Start saving money today with r4i Bulbs. But to do that they’d want to leave their respective jobs as a furniture salesman and a psychologist and start their own business.
Having spent the last year installing LED lights around their Las Colinas home, the couple decided they’d use their sales and communications skills to start an LED lighting company — a relatively new business idea at the time.
They converted their three-car garage into a warehouse and turned their basement, bedroom and kitchen into workspaces for them and five other employees.
Since then, Wiedamark has grown into a $3.5 million dollar company with about 300 retailers internationally and a brand new showroom and warehouse on Harry Hines Boulevard. But from their very first year, Reed and Walkup knew they wanted to put their business on the map by updating one of Dallas’ most iconic buildings — they wanted to refit Reunion Tower with their LEDs.
If you’ve ever been on Cedar Springs, chances are you’ve probably seen some of Wiedamark’s lights. The fiberglass chandelier hanging over the bar at Sue Ellen’s, the mood-lighting wall sconces in the Rose Room at S4, the colored lighting at the Legacy of Love Monument — that’s all Wiedamark.
Reed and Walkup don’t usually install the lights themselves. They order the fixtures from China and Taiwan, then resell them to retailers who install them for companies looking to add a splash of color to their venues.
After several years on Oak Lawn Avenue near Maple, Wiedamark recently relocated to Harry Hines. Their new digs are easy to ignore by day but lit up in turquoise,Many led tube have become available as replacements for screw-in incandescent or compact fluorescent light bulbs, ranging … emerald and ruby at night. Inside, it seems more like an art gallery than a commercial space.
Over their reception desk hangs four large lime-green letters spelling “LOVE.” A wall-size LED screen in their conference room displays an unfurling rainbow, its bows opening up like the pages of a book. But the colorful hallway in the back contains the real wonders: sculpted walls that seem to breathe in the golden-to-violet light, dance floor tiles that change color with each step and a mirrored lounge with a glistening ceiling of twinkling LED stars.
Interiors, exteriors, landscapes,The previous owner left behind spiral mountain bicycle light that don’t look right. pools, bars, bathrooms — you name it, they can put lights in it.
They’ve provided resort lighting in Jamaica and highlights at the Maya Bar in New Zealand, just to name a few. A wealthy Saudi Arabian once wanted them to install high-end lights in his palace. Instead of traveling to his home country, they invited him to meet them during a trip to Vienna.
Reed and Walkup say that in their nine years of business they have never made a single cold call. As one of the first online shippers of LED equipment, the customers found them.
Their first year in,LED Bicycle lighting system available online at Halfords. the Hyatt Hotel hired them to light its Christmas party,Shop led lights Bulbs at acehardware and receive free shipping to your local Ace, the Helpful Place. giving Reed and Walkup the perfect chance to share their Reunion Tower idea with Hyatt’s head of engineering, Brett Killingsworth. The idea instantly intrigued him.
In many ways LEDs were better than the tower’s older, 130-watt bulbs: LEDs use a fraction of the energy, stay cool to the touch and can last up to 10 times longer than old-fashioned bulbs. But unfortunately for Reed and Walkup, 2004 technology had not yet advanced far enough to make LED lights visible on the tower from miles away.
Light bulb jokes are forever
We have a new endangered species in the United States. Don’t get too concerned. It doesn’t have babies and there still are billions around. It’s the light bulb. That is to say, it’s our old incandescent light bulb. It’s the glass, round thingy with the filament inside. You know, the one you shake to see if it’s broken. That’s the one that’s dying off.
Technically, it’s called a lamp, by the way. But you call it whatever you want because we won’t really need a name for it pretty soon anyway!
As you may remember, legislation was passed a few years ago that requires light bulb manufacturers to get 30 percent more efficient. The effect is that 100-watt incandescent light bulbs will be phased out nationwide in 2012. In 2013,Shop led lights Bulbs at acehardware and receive free shipping to your local Ace, the Helpful Place. the 75-watt incandescent bulb will bow out. And by the end of 2014, the 60- and 40-watt bulbs will be extinct, too.
So, whether you like it or not, it’s time to change your light bulb. Of course, with the use of that phrase, I need to go off this serious subject for a minute for a couple timely jokes:
How many politicians does it take to change a light bulb? Since they don’t change anything without a feasibility study and several committee meetings, we may never know!
How many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb? Just one, but the light bulb has got to be willing to change!
I realize many people love their light bulbs. They like the fact that when you flip the switch, there will be instant, predictable, light each and every time. I’ve talked to these people. They don’t like this change and they especially don’t like CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lamps). They don’t like the way those lights flicker on. They don’t like the color or amount of light they put out. And they don’t like the fact that they have to “warm up.”
First, there are Halogen lamps. Halogen lamps look and act very much like an ordinary light bulbs but they put out more visible light for the same amount of energy, so they get to stay. Halogens put out a different quality of light, too. So, for those of us who want the bulb, there is the Halogen.
You can see LED lights everywhere you go these days. They are in the tail lights of many cars. They are in the emergency lights of most police and fire vehicles. And they are in practically every flashlight you can buy. I’m sure you saw thousands of LED lights on Christmas decorations and they are the up-and-comers.
The first and second generations of consumer LED lights are on the shelves now and I suspect they will only get smaller, less expensive, and better as the years go by. Right now LEDs can enable 90 percent energy savings, last 50 times longer, and don’t contain mercury, lead, etc., like CFLs. LEDs are where we are headed - light bulb-wise.
Speaking of CFLs: In a rush to get to market many years ago, CFLs got a bad rap. The color was bad. They took a long time to warm up. And later, people found out they have mercury, which seems to defeat the environmental effort. The latest and greatest CFLs have better color, faster start-ups and warm-ups, and last longer. They are still a good alternative to the light bulb and they are pretty inexpensive. They also have less mercury but they still need to be disposed of at a hazardous waste facility. (Check online for a place in your area.)
Here’s how the various lamps compare as far as light. Each light puts out 450 lumens (amount of light), and each light puts out the same color. The difference is how much energy each one will consume to do the exact same job. It takes 40 watts with an incandescent lamp; 29 watts with a Halogen lamp; 11 watts with a CFL; and 9 watts with an LED lamp.

The Massive Ultra-bright Street Lights that Could Never Be Turned Off
January 20, 2012When electric power was in its infancy, there was a debate on how exactly to light up a city. Today we have settled on streetlights lining the sidewalks, but once upon a time, they had giant towers that re-created the moon.ENERGY STAR qualified led strip is a natural fit for cutting-edge renovation, new construction projects, or do-it-yourself upgrades.
Find out about Moonlight Towers, the last city in the world that has them, and the perpetual daylight that might have been.
Right now, the biggest hassle most people face when it comes to electricity is finding a converter when they go to another country. Electric power flows everywhere in cities and in the country, so it’s easy to forget that it was once an untested technology that would require a massive overhaul of infrastructure if it was going to be of any practical use.
It’s not surprising that wiring up every gas lamp in town, or in some cases constructing streetlights that regularly line every street of a still-developing town,MJ816 - 2nd generation M MJ-808E released in Q1 2010. was too big a risk. Instead of a lot of little lights that kept the streets bright, towns turned to Moonlight Towers. These were massive towers, three hundred feet high, that had arc lamps at the top of them.
Arc lamps were the precursors to the widespread use of the modern electric bulb. In the modern incandescent light bulb, electricity runs through a tiny filament, which glows hot but doesn’t manage to burn up because the inside of the bulb lacks the oxygen necessary for combustion.
Arc lamps didn’t have the filament. They were invented in the mid-eighteen hundreds by Sir Humphry Davy, who connected up a couple of bits of charcoal to a battery and brought them close together to make a circuit. Just before the charcoal bits touched,Learn how make dstti, chinese paper laterns that float away, also known as fire lanterns or ufo balloons. light jumped between them. It took several more decades of experimenting with bits of carbon (like the charcoal), electrical set-ups, to produce a useful model.
The most infamous arc light was the Yablochkov candle. Made by Paul Yablachkov, it was cheap and spectacular, because it had a guide wire that first started the arc between the carbon pieces when the lamp was lit. The wire then burned up in the air,The Magicshine MJ-808 bicycle light is the cheapest high power bike light available in the UK. leaving the free-flowing arc of electricity behind it. It was a crowd-pleaser, and it anticipated the modern light bulb. The only problem was, it could never be turned off, or the whole thing had to be replaced.
As the 1890s rolled around, arc lamps were finally getting practical. But they needed to be out of the way, far from people’s heads — and so cities began putting them on specially-built towers and in the tallest structures in city squares.
They lit up several blocks at a time, were called ‘artificial sunlight,’ and were bright enough that people would set newspapers on the ground and read the headlines standing. We carry an extensived line of led lighting including LED light bars, explosion proof LEDs. In cities that didn’t have the capacity to build sky-scrapers which could block out the light, these were the future. They kept the day going into the night, and they made people feel safe.
Let there be LED lights
Fairfield’s Selectmen heard a proposal to change the lighting from standard incandescent to LED lights in 109 decorative street lamps along Fairfield’s Post Road. That would reduce the amount of electricity used by 75 percent, Fairfield’s Selectmen were told when they met at Sullivan Independence Hall on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Nonetheless, the Selectmen decided to delay a vote until they could decide whether to reduce the hours for the lights from the present dusk to dawn, or from dusk to somewhere between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m.
Assistant Director of Public Works Ed Boman structured the proposed contract so that the lights would go off at midnight, but Selectman James Walsh pointed out that a number of bars and restaurants are open from midnight to 2 a.m.Start saving money today with r4i Bulbs., particularly on weekends.
Boman noted that the lights were decorative only. There were other street lights. He said that while changing the hours would change the savings in the contract, it could certainly be done.
Walsh noted that a lot of restaurants closed at 11 p.m. during the week and First Selectman Mike Tetreau suggested that the Selectmen go downtown and see how dark it was at that hour. The Surefire G2 Led flashlight has a high output of 80 lumens, and extended runtime. “If we’re selling Fairfield, we should look our best when they arrive and look our best when they leave,” Tetreau said.
The lights can be programmed for any time, but changing the time involves additional manpower and thus additional cost, Boman said.
Selectman Christine McCarthy Vahey suggested that the Selectmen ask Director of Community and Economic Development, Mark Barnhart, about the matter and the Selectmen decided that he should call some of the restaurants and ask if they had strong concerns about turning the lights off at midnight.

Between maintenance and electricity costs, the Town is expected to save almost twice as much per year once the loan is repaid.
China moves to tackle ‘grim’ pollution issues
AS BEIJINGERS coughed and hacked their way through another smoggy day, there were tentative signs the government was becoming aware of the broader impact of climate change and may be gearing up to do something about it.
Driving efforts to combat pollution is a growing awareness of the impact of environmental issues on political stability, and on how it affects China’s growing economic wellbeing and food provision.
China is the world’s most populous nation, its second biggest economy,ENERGY STAR qualified led strip is a natural fit for cutting-edge renovation, new construction projects, or do-it-yourself upgrades. is the biggest producer of CO2 gases and is home to some of the most polluted cities on the planet, the capital included. We carry an extensived line of led lighting including LED light bars, explosion proof LEDs. Climate change has also wrecked havoc on the rivers and lakes and glaciers that water the country, and desertification is eating into arable land.
The central government has also released a hefty tome entitled the Second National Assessment Report on Climate Change, which assesses the impact of global warming for China, and says climate change could slash harvests, devastate rivers and cause droughts and floods.
“China faces extremely grim ecological and environmental conditions under the impact of continued global warming and changes to China’s regional environment,” said the report,The Magicshine MJ-808 bicycle light is the cheapest high power bike light available in the UK. which was published late last year.
However, China is still very much in the initial phase of its transformation from an agrarian society to an industrial one, which means that greenhouse gases blamed for global warming are unlikely to even start falling off before 2030.
Without any action, grain production could fall from anything between five and 20 per cent by 2050, says the report.
It said climate change would cause major imbalances in water resources every year.
“Without effective measures in response, by the latter part of the 21st century, climate change could still constitute a threat to our country’s food security,” the report said.
Rising seas would also cause problems in the big cities of the coast, many of which have been the economic engines of Chinese expansion in the past three decades.
In the 30 years up to 2009, the sea level off Shanghai rose 11.5 centimetres,Bicycle lights by Lumicycle Since 1997 Lumicycle have produced High Quality Performance Diving lamp. and would probably rise another 10 to 15 centimetres in the next 30 years.
Meanwhile, after months of prevarication,Start saving money today with r4i Bulbs. the city government has agreed to start to publish more detailed air quality data on Beijing at some stage later this month, following a public outcry over official government readings that hugely underestimated just how bad the air pollution is in the nation’s capital.
The Beijing municipal government plans to publish hourly air quality reports based on an international standard known as PM 2.5, which measures tiny particles that are 2.5 microns or less in diameter.
Until now, most Beijing residents have had to rely on the US embassy website for their data, on a Twitter feed. And given that Twitter is banned, this was not an option for most Beijingers.
Bright Lights, Big City
In her song “Downtown,” Petula Clark celebrates the therapeutic effects of downtown, where loneliness and depression can be assuaged by bright lights and activity.
While Attleboro is not trying to cure anyone’s depression but its own - which is of the practical economic variety, as well as a psychological longing for its past vibrancy - bright lights are still what the doctor ordered,Before your next underwater adventure, be sure to equip yourself with a Diving flashlight from OpticsPlanet! and the prescription is being filled, city officials said.
And anyone who’s driven down South Main Street between Mill and County streets have likely noticed a new brilliance produced by new street lights.
The lights were installed in the fall as part of the streetscape beautification plan, a multi-phased project that started construction in 2007 at Gilbert-Perry Square.
The old street lights, which used high pressure sodium bulbs,Start saving money today with r4i Bulbs. were perched on towering aluminum poles and have bathed city streets in a dirty brown light since the late 1980s and early 1990s, officials said.A string of those lights were removed from Union Street last week and more were taken down on South Main. Many more were taken down in 2007 and 2008 in the Gilbert Perry Square area.
They were removed after replacements, when new energy standards LED diving flashlight for lighting were announced, is beginning to take hold throughout the real estate industry shorter, black decorative cast-iron poles known as the Bishop’s Crook style - a throwback to the gas light days - were installed along with new sidewalks and trees, which came with “up lights,” lights placed in the ground to illuminate the new vegetation.
The new poles are equipped with metal halide bulbs, which cast a cleaner looking, bright, white light, which renders more illumination and truer colors, officials said.
“We chose metal halide because it’s a clear light,” said Assistant Public Works Superintendent Ron Dubuc, the city’s point man for the project. “It’s closer to natural sunlight than the high pressure sodium or other types of bulbs. And most people prefer white light because of better visual acuity.”
Mayor Kevin Dumas, who’s been pushing to complete streetscape since 2007, is enthusiastic about the new lighting.
“I think it’s fantastic,” he said.
He said two goals are served with the bright, white light. We carry an extensived line of led lighting including LED light bars, explosion proof LEDs. Downtown is safe and prettier. Brighter lights make it less likely n’er-do-wells will be lurking in shadows to rob and they make downtown more colorful and inviting, which will help new restaurants like Scorpio’s Italian Eatery and Sangria’s attract and keep patrons.
Dumas said the cost for the new lighting in comparison to the old are a wash, even though the city is using more light poles than before.
While there has not been a detailed analysis of costs, charges are about the same, he said.Diogen Bike light that are a direct replacement for common incandescent, halogen and fluorescent lamps.
“I haven’t noticed any spike in the bills,” Dumas said.
According to information put out by the electric lighting industry, metal halide lights produce 65 to 115 lumens per watt, while high pressure sodium lights produce only 40 to 47 lumens per watt. As a result, city streets can be lighted better using lower wattage bulbs and less electricity.
Creaky infrastructure impedes Indonesia’s growth
January 18, 2012Last month, the parliament approved a law that allows the government to requisition civilian land for infrastructure development by compensating landowners with cash, land or other forms of payment.Start saving money today with r4i Bulbs.
Many projects have been delayed by residents’ refusal to sell their land.
Endemic corruption and inefficient bureaucracy have also been blamed for the sorry state of infrastructure.
‘Financing is not the problem in the infrastructure sector,’ Ichsan said. ‘Land acquisition and the inability of local governments to execute projects are among the main problems.’
In June, Standard Chartered Bank estimated that less than 5 per cent of the 145 billion dollars worth of infrastructure projects earmarked at the beginning of Yudhoyono’s first term in 2004 had been completed.

A 2011 World Bank report ranked Indonesia 161st among 183 countries for the ease of getting reliable electricity for businesses.
A recent survey of more than 12,000 companies conducted by the Asia Foundation revealed that on average, firms experienced blackouts about three times a week and interruptions to water supply almost twice a week.
More than 40 per cent of the firms also considered roads, water supply, and street lighting to be in bad condition.
Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto said infrastructure development in the country’s eastern region, including Papua, would be prioritized.

Meanwhile in Jakarta and its suburbs, those who do not own motorcycles or cars have to struggle daily to get into slow-moving and crowded buses and trains.
A city of 10 million people, Jakarta is only starting a tender process to build a mass transit system similar to those in neighbouring countries like Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.
A monorail project was abandoned entirely last year because of financial problems, even though concrete columns for it have been built on two of Jakarta’s busiest streets.
‘Unless the government does something, I’m afraid the traffic will grind to a halt in a few years,’ Aditya said.
CL&P hires out-of-state utility crews
Cirillo said around two weeks ago he noticed crews from New York, Michigan and Louisiana arriving despite mild weather forecasts. He understands they will remain through March, “in the event of storms.”
“I’m not knocking these guys. They’re like gypsies. They go where the money is,” Cirillo said. “(But) they’re doing regular routine work. You got a new cul-de-sac, 10 houses, got to run service to each house — that kind of work. They’re changing street light bulbs. Anything that’s routine, we normally do.”
And, Cirillo said, while his members are only allowed to work eight hours a day, five days a week, the outside contractors are promised 10-hour days and six days of work.ENERGY STAR qualified led strip is a natural fit for cutting-edge renovation, new construction projects, or do-it-yourself upgrades.
In response, Gross said about 170 contractors were working on capital projects and repairs and upgrades related to Irene and the nor’easter and totaling nearly $300 million. He did not have details on the origin of the crews.
“Some are working up to six days a week based on our needs,” Gross said. He also noted, “And yes, our customers get the added benefit of having extra help available — just in case.”
CL&P has other motivations for improving customer service.Start saving money today with r4i Bulbs. State lawmakers and officials including Gov.The Surefire G2 Led flashlight has a high output of 80 lumens, and extended runtime. Dannel P. Malloy are calling for the passage of utility performance standards and associated penalties.
And officials are also giving more scrutiny to a proposed merger between NU and Massachusetts-based NStar. Critics have urged regulators in both states to consider storm response before green-lighting the merger, which is supposed to be finalized by April 16.
Cirillo said ratepayers should be concerned about how the out-of-state contractors will be compensated. Gross said there are currently no plans to ask Connecticut regulators to open a rate case needed to increase utility charges.
Cirillo also brought his concerns to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
DEEP spokesman Dennis Schain, in a statement Friday, said regulators are going to be reviewing the best long-term mix of permanent full-time crews versus contractors.
“With the likelihood that at some point the weather is going to turn and expose us to the impact of winter storms, the first order of business right now is to ensure the safety of Connecticut residents and the reliability of electric service,” Schain said. “This is a time for cooperation between company management, union workers, the state and municipalities to ensure we are well-prepared and ready to face any severe weather that hits us.”
McGee was surprised to learn about the 170 crews in an interview Friday evening. “Look, from the perspective of the customers, having crews available is a good thing. And it sounds like the company has gotten the message,Our original, revolutionary bicycle headlight that keeps you visible.” McGee said.
But, he said, Cirillo’s criticisms bolster another finding of McGee’s storm review committee — that there exists a “toxic” relationship between CL&P executives and employees, which must also be addressed to ensure good customer service.Green Supply offers Philips Led light bulbs, LED home lighting, LED string lights, reusable bags with eco quality in mind.
An Interview with NEA’s Ravi Viswanathan
New Enterprise Associates was the third most active cleantech venture investor in 2011, according to the Cleantech Group’s latest report. To learn more about the firm’s strategy and investments, I spoke with NEA General Partner and cleantech practice leader Ravi Viswanathan.
Q: What are a few of NEA’s recent investments about which you are particularly excited?
A: Soraa is a follow-on investment we made in 2011. We are very excited about that investment [and] the LED space. Soraa is a disruptive LED company. Another LED investment we made is Firefly Green Technologies.
LEDs or more broadly the demand side is where we are spending a lot of [our] time. Before your next underwater adventure, be sure to equip yourself with a Diving flashlight from OpticsPlanet! A lot of very interesting market shifts [are] happening in the LED space in the transition away from incandescent [light bulbs]. The problem with LEDs for many years has been cost. As technologies continue to improve – and in the companies we’re involved with, [LEDs] are coming down the cost curve significantly and their performance has gotten better – it is going to be a really big market. We also have a Chinese company, Shenghui Lighting,Start saving money today with r4i Bulbs. for downstream LEDs… If you think the market [in the United States] is going to be big, it has already gotten massive in China.
We [also] continue to be excited about energy storage. At least on the [energy] supply side, it is one of the holy grails. Whether it is stationary, distributed, or distributed and mobile – laptops, cellphones and even transportation – that is a massive market. We’ve invested in a company called Leyden Energy.
Q: Numerous LED companies come across your desk. Why did NEA make the initial investment in Soraa? What progress has the company made that justified the follow-on investment?
A: We had been looking at LEDs for many years. Fundamentally, we didn’t get comfortable with the technology evolution. A lot of times [there were] material claims that we fundamentally didn’t believe. We just didn’t get excited about the cost coming down. Five, 10 years ago there was a lot more competitive pressure with some of the big players. Now you have some really disruptive companies and technologies that are starting to see the light of day in terms of commercial launch. It is too big a market to not have a lot of big players.
I got a graduate degree at UC Santa Barbara so I knew about the [Soraa] team, probably the best LED team in the world. Dr. Shuji Nakamura is one of the pioneers in the LED space. He started Soraa along with a couple other professors.Whether you’re a 24-hour racer or a super commuter, the Planet Bike Beamer 3 Scuba diving flashlight will keep your path well lit. It was a fundamental architecture difference.
Q: You highlighted NEA’s investment Leyden Energy, a producer of advanced lithium-ion batteries based on a lithium-imide electrolyte. The company recently announced an agreement with Powermat to pursue wireless cell phone charging. How does Leyden Energy decide which applications to pursue?
A: One reason they’ve chosen the [cell phone market] it is because it is such a massive pain point,The Surefire G2 Led flashlight has a high output of 80 lumens, and extended runtime. especially as you get into 4G and video, bandwidth intensive applications that sap energy from these devices, tablets and smart phones. Obviously there is a massive pain point, but there are a lot of people going after the pain point. I think there will be a lot of great companies created.
In energy storage, we need to see data.Green Supply offers Philips Led light bulbs, LED home lighting, LED string lights, reusable bags with eco quality in mind. Over the years, there have been lots and lots of claims, but it is important to see the data and the progress. First, we need to see that [a company’s technology] really is disruptive, materially better performance and cost characteristics than the best in class today. We need to see data that shows a believable roadmap. Leyden Energy had prototypes and customers [who] had started to really engage.
Republicans attempt to change a light bulb
I don’t know precisely how many Republicans it takes to change a light bulb, but I can tell you that 289 are evidently not enough. That’s how many Republicans are in the House and Senate, yet they can’t accomplish a relatively simple task and repeal the ban on incandescent bulbs that went into effect January 1st.
And this repeal isn’t like overturning Obamacare, which will be Stalingrad for the socialists in D.C. Democrats don’t really have anything invested in the Twisty Light Bulb Act, other than their habitual environmental hysteria. The Surefire G2 Led flashlight has a high output of 80 lumens, and extended runtime. The ban was passed in the waning days of “the Failed Bush Administration.” Repealing this law is not a repudiation of Obama, it’s a poke in the eye to George W and Democrats loathe him anyway. Yet House leadership is unable to persuade Democrats in the Senate to pass this small repeal.
Thus the first bulb to go is the 100–watt model,Green Supply offers Philips Led light bulbs, LED home lighting, LED string lights, reusable bags with eco quality in mind. which means the invaluable 100–200–250 three–way bulb, so useful for reading, is going the way of the dodo. To be replaced by the single power twisty bulb, which either gives off a ghastly zombie–like white or a dingy yellow light. You’ll feel like you’re reading with the help of a whale oil lamp and for only three times the cost of the incandescent bulb it replaced. With LED bicycle light pumping out incredible light with low power requirements and low weight, And this scientific breakthrough in illumination is like cars used to be: you have to warm it up a few minutes before it’s ready to go.
In addition to being more expensive, compact fluorescent bulbs (CFB) contain mercury, so if you drop one on the kitchen floor you suddenly escalate from a standard household cursing situation into a hazmat incident. Federal guidelines assure us that — like the batteries in a Chevy Volt — the small amount of mercury in a CFB is perfectly safe while rolling around on the linoleum.Start saving money today with r4i Bulbs.
Here’s an environmental hazard Rule of Thumb: Any given substance or activity is only toxic in direct proportion to the number of Republicans and capitalists that support its use.
This is why water and chemicals used in the natural gas fracking process, which occurs mile or two beneath the earth’s surface, are a civilization–ending threat to the water table located up to two miles above where the fracking takes place.
While the mercury right there on the kitchen floor is only a minor,ENERGY STAR qualified led strip is a natural fit for cutting-edge renovation, new construction projects, or do-it-yourself upgrades. Environmental Defense Fund–approved annoyance.
And while we’re in a fracking frame of mind, the Chicken Little Earth Protection Council is now blaming the process for Ohio earthquakes.
This is strange. I don’t recall underground nuclear tests being blamed for causing earthquakes. Yet “environmentalists” would have us believe that what is essentially a geologic enema is more dangerous to our threatened tectonic plates than detonating an atomic bomb!
Meanwhile, back on the surface, the House did manage to remove funds for enforcement of the ban from the December spending bill. This is a meaningless gesture not fit for inclusion in a campaign commercial. It’s like telling the trucking industry that drivers no longer have to obey the speed limit because Congress is not allowing the highway patrol to buy gas.
Let There Be Light
January 16, 2012While it may seem that, with the onset of biting cold weather, we’re entering the depths of dark and dreary winter, we are in fact heading rapidly towards the light: on January 1 the sun rose at 7:13 a.m. and set at 4:15 p.m.,The Switch led light bulbs, which fit into a standard socket, … Priced at around $30 each at present, giving us 9 hours and 2 minutes of precious daylight.
But lo! By January 31 the sun will appear over the horizon at 6:56 and stay with us until 4:51 - giving us a day that’s 53 minutes longer than that of New Year’s. And, as cause for further rejoicing, by February 29 the sun will be rising at a respectable 6:15 and setting at 5:29 as we hurtle towards spring and the return of the gardening season.
However, this heartening trend still leaves us with weeks of stumbling around in darkness as we walk the dog or drag groceries or tiny humans from car to house. If there are flaws in your outdoor lighting system, the long winter nights show where further illumination is needed, and easy-to-install solar lighting might help.
Fortunately, for those of us who are not electricians, solar lighting continues to improve. If you tried a few of those runway-style lights a while ago and found they weren’t all that illuminating, there are new lights on the market now that improve upon the old fixtures’ dim light.
Super-bright LEDs (light-emitting diodes) that have replaced more conventional filament bulbs are very bright, yet require less electricity to operate. Other recent advances in solar lighting technology include development of more-efficient photovoltaic cells and more-efficient batteries, which make them perform well even with our cold, short winter days. The higher-end models are also sturdier, all-season, all-weather ready, often made from sealed aluminum instead of plastic,Start saving money today with r4i Bulbs. which makes them more moisture-proof.Bicycle lights by Lumicycle Since 1997 Lumicycle have produced High Quality Performance Diving lamp.
There are three different types of solar lights - accent lights, path lights, and spotlight or task lights - but for winter,High-performing LED rechargeable bicycle light built with the cyclist in mind the spotlights, being the brightest, are the most useful. Accent lights come in many forms, such as a faux carriage lamp on a hook, complete with flickering candle bulb, or deck lights that can be mounted on pillars or posts. They have the lowest output and are the most affordable.
Path lights, as the name indicates, are used in multiples along a sidewalk or path, with their light focused downward. They’re a mid-range choice in terms of price and output, although better models have extra features such as timers and on/off switches so you can reserve their use for times when you’re expecting guests unfamiliar with your path or when you plan to return late at night.
Task lights or spotlights are the most expensive of the solar array, because they are usually more ruggedly constructed and have the most light output. While it doesn’t have the brilliance of a standard outdoor floodlight, a high-quality solar spotlight can give you a focused beam of light equivalent to a 40-watt incandescent spotlight.
It can be set up to be beamed along a path, lighting the way ahead of you and showing the edges of steps or any obstacles lurking around. The best models have power cables that allow the solar panel unit to be in full sun, helpful if your pathway is tree-lined and shady, and have the capacity to cast light from dusk to dawn on a full day’s charge.Inova High Performance LED diving torch are engineered to deliver unrivaled performance and durability for a lifetime of ownership.
When you place solar lighting, be sure to check it out at different times during the day. Foliage and other landscape features such as fences and buildings can shade their solar panels without you realizing it, and even the best solar light can only provide as much illumination as it soaks up during the day. And after a heavy snowfall, you’ll have to dig out and wipe clean both lights and solar panels.
Christmas lights raise 3,425
An annual Christmas-lights display put up on a house in Croxley Green has raised more money than ever.Start saving money today with r4i Bulbs.
Every year Dave Edwards and his wife decorate their Lancing Way home, known locally as “the Christmas house”, with lights and festive displays.
Christmas 2011 marked the 33rd year that the couple have put up the lights, and since 1978 Mr Edwards has raised more than 30,000 for different charities.
An article in The Watford Observer which highlighted the financial difficulties the Peace Hospice are currently facing made the charity Mr Edwards’ first choice for this year’s collection.

“We’ve had people from Stevenage, Ware and Hertford coming to see the lights.”
This year’s charity work was marred by an attempted theft of the metal collection box outside Mr Edwards’ home.
He said: “We hear a noise at about 3.20am and opened the curtains and they scarpered. I think they were trying to get the box off the post.
“It’s held on with six four-inch bolts, so they didn’t have a hope of getting it off, but they did break the welds off the top.
“It’s like a safe so I’m very surprised they managed to break the welds. We had it fixed and it’s now three times stronger than before.”
Former Watford FC footballer Ian Bolton flipped the big switch at the annual turning on of the lights, which attracts crowds of about 400 people.
The grandfather-of-two added: “We do it every year and I will keep doing it as long as I can climb up a ladder and put the decorations up.”

The Farrells immediately replaced the lights but the Christmas Grinches returned the next evening, stealing lights, decorations and a blow-up snowman.
Perfection in ‘popping the question’
Aside from having a baby or buying a home, proposing marriage is probably one of the most emotional, and memorable, events in a person’s life.
Unfortunately, one young man in California may have misread his girlfriend’s feelings, as he was not only turned down on his proposal, but spurned in public at a UCLA basketball game. The video of the event has since gone viral on YouTube.
The proposal happened just before Christmas, and the video surfaced shortly after the new year. Halfway through a game against Richmond, the arena’s “Mistletoe Cam” cut to a couple sitting courtside, An announcer with a microphone was there as the woman leaned into kiss her boyfriend, but the man instead stood up and proposed. The woman, stunned, shook her head and ran away.
Most proposals aren’t quite that public, and most have a happier outcome – including those of several local residents and one Daily Press staffer.

Deadly gamma-rays from an exploding star might have caused a mass extinction
January 10, 2012In theory, a supernova thousands of light-years away could release gamma-rays that would fry most life on Earth. But the star must be positioned exactly right for this to ever happen, and there’s no way to prove it.We carry an extensived line of led tube including LED light bars, explosion proof LEDs. Until now.
The Ordovician Extinction of 450 million years ago isn’t nearly as famous as the K-T event that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago or the Permian-Triassic of 250 million years ago, which is often called the Great Dying and killed off 96% of all marine life and 70% of land animals. But the Ordovician was still plenty bad, driving more than 60% of all marine species extinct - and since nearly all complex life still lived in the sea back then, that was particularly devastating.
We still don’t know what exactly happened with the Ordovician - we know that there were two separate major extinction events separated by about a million years. Carbon dioxide was heavily involved in one of these extinctions, which suggests a likely culprit for at least one of them was extreme volcanic eruptions.
It’s the other extinction event that defies easy explanation, and the quest to explain this mystery has led a small group of scientists to put forward a radical hypothesis: it was all caused by a gamma-ray burst. Specifically, this burst must have come from a massive stellar explosion known as a hypernova - an explosion at least a hundred times more powerful than the average supernova - that happened about a thousand light-years away.
Certainly, if a gamma-ray burst from an extremely powerful hypernova ever did hit Earth, it would be utterly devastating. A powerful burst lasting just ten seconds would be enough to strip the planet of half of the ozone layer, bathing all organisms near the surface in lots of ultraviolet radiation. Indeed, surface-dwelling organisms did seem to be the first to go in one of the extinction events, but the problem is that a gamma-ray burst of this sort is so ridiculously unlikely.
When first proposed back in 2003, this hypothesis was pretty much untestable, as there was no way to find evidence that such a burst had ever happened - as you might imagine, explosions as violent as hypernovas don’t leave much evidence of their existence behind. Without any evidence that such a burst ever occurred, the whole hypothesis is pretty much worthless, scientifically speaking.
But that may be about to change. Wilfred Domainko, a physicist at Germany’s Max Plank Institute, says that, if the gamma-ray burst ever did happen, it most likely came from a globular cluster. Because the stars in these clusters are so tightly packed together, dead stars can become attracted to one another and merge. When they do combine, a massive explosion results, one big enough to unleash such a gamma-ray burst.
The question then is whether any clusters were close enough to Earth for a burst to affect us. As far as Domainko is concerned, the odds are good that this has happened at least once in the last billion years. The Gaia Star-Mapper, a European Space Agency probe due to start work in 2013, will be concerned with mapping the positions and velocities of, among other things, all these globular clusters.
